Winter wonderland: “hozhatsz bármit, csak havat ne”
Back home, winter skipped the season this year due to lack of interest—but in Umeå, the Christmas atmosphere is guaranteed all winter long. It’s not uncommon for up to 70 cm of snow to fall in a single day, leaving meter-high piles across the city after road clearing operations.
Managing this white wonder requires serious logistics: snowplows and excavators work around the clock in this winter wonderland. Trucks continuously haul snow to an external collection site (!)—because even this kind of urban “waste” can’t just be dumped anywhere.
The locals specifically asked that I bring anything as a gift—just not snow, as there’s already plenty of that. I obliged, and for the first full week after my arrival, I was greeted with dazzling sunshine nearly every day. Only later did I get a proper taste of the true subarctic winter.
That said, I arrived at the perfect time—this is when the days start to lengthen rapidly. Before this, from November to February, the sun merely dances along the horizon between 9 a.m. and 2 p.m., then quickly disappears and makes way for darkness.
Otthon idén érdeklődés hiányában elmaradt a tél, azonban Umeå-ban a karácsonyi hangulat egész télen garantált. Nem ritka, hogy napi 70 cm hó esik és több méteres kupacok maradnak a város minden pontján az utak takarítása után. Komoly erőfeszítéseket igényel ennek a fehér csodának a logisztikája, éjjel nappal hókotrók és markolók járják a “winter wonderlandet”. Teherautók folyamatosan hordják a havat egy külső gyűjtőhelyre(!) ugyanis ezt a városi “szemetet” sem nem lehet csak úgy kihányni a szabadba!
A helyiek kifejezetten megkértek, hogy bármit vihetek ajándékként, csak havat ne, abból van elég. Ennek eleget is tettem, az érkezésem első bő hetében gyakorlatilag végig szikrázó napsütés volt és csak utána kaptam ízelítőt az igazi szubarktikus télből… egyébként a legjobb időszakban érkeztem: ilyenkor már rohamosan hosszabbodnak a nappalok. Ezt megelőzően a november-február időszakban a nap egy kicsit táncol a horizonton 9 és délután kettő között, majd gyorsan elköszön és jön a sötétség…
