Since February 2023, I’ve been working as a postdoctoral researcher at Umeå University (pronounced “Ümeo”). I’m continuing my work under the mentorship of Gerhard Gröbner, in close collaboration with the group of Magnus Wolf-Watz. My choice was clearly influenced by the alliterative magic of my current and previous supervisors’ names (Kövér Katalin, Hendrik Heinz…).

Umeå is a rapidly developing hub in northern Sweden, located on the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia. The city can receive up to 12 flights a day, though practically all of them arrive from Stockholm’s airports—so if you’re coming from outside Sweden, you’ll almost certainly need to transfer.

If you’re feeling adventurous, you can skip the connecting flight in Stockholm and continue your journey to Umeå by bus or train. The latter, often called the “Polar Express,” takes about six hours as it rumbles northward along the coast of the Gulf of Bothnia. Alternatively, you can choose one of the two overnight sleeper trains and wake up in Umeå the next morning.

Fun fact: there’s one domestic flight per day from Sweden’s ski resort town Östersund, and occasionally a plane or two wanders in from Malmö as well.

2023 februárjától posztdoktori állást kaptam az Umeå Egyetemen (ejtsd: “űmeó”). Munkámat Gerhard Gröbner szárnyai alatt folytatom, szoros együttműködésben Magnus Wolf-Watz csoportjával. Választásomat egyértelműen témavezetőim/főnökeim neveinek alliteráló sora határozta meg (Kövér Katalin, Hendrik Heinz…).

Umeå Svédország északi részének dinamikusan fejlődő központja, a Botteni-tenger partján helyezkedik el. A városba akár napi 12 járat is érkezhet, de lényegében csak Stockholm reptereiről, emiatt repülővel mindenképpen átszállást kell bevállalni, ha Svédországon kívülről tervezünk érkezni. Ha kalandvágyunk jelentősebb, Stockholmban kihagyhatjuk a csatlakozó járatot és busszal vagy vonattal is folytathatjuk utunkat Umeå-ba. Az utóbbi “polar expresszel” nagyjából 6 órát zakatolunk a Botteni-tenger partja mentén észak felé haladva, vagy napi két lehetőségünk van hálókocsis jeggyel a teljes éjszakát átutazva, reggelre megérkezni.
Érdekesség, hogy napi egy belföldi járat érkezik a svéd síparadicsomból, Östersundból és alkalmanként Malmőből is idetéved egy-két gép.
