The largest underground iron mine in the world
Only guided tours for ~500 kr. The company was founded in 1890. Has been the engine of the Swedish economy ever since. Started open-pit mining of two mountains; closed down Luossavaara in the 60s and went underground on Kirunavaara. Now they’re mining 1300m below the ground. The ore deposit is not vertical, therefore the rocks above become more unstable over time. Eventually, by mining deeper and deeper they will collapse with part of the old town above. LKAB secured a huge budget to move the city to a safer place, which has been an ongoing process for years. The mining facility supply 80-90% of the iron/steel production of Europe, using 1.5% percent of Sweden’s electricity. High hopes for the green transitions, and strong marketing. They promise to go fully electric by 2045 and shift the production to sponge iron utilizing hydrogen-based production. The hydrogen will be produced on-site by water electrolysis requiring 25 times more (!) energy than it’s necessary now.
